Overexposure to Ultra Violet - from the sun or from sessions on a "sunbed" can result in serious burns. The skin needs re-hydration quickly and the burns need soothing with a balm that will also assist in fighting any infection that may set in. Manage the burns and the moisture with our sunburn balm. Calendula battles infection while Comfrey rapidly sets about closing wounds. Olive Oil helps to retain moisture and keep the skin supple.
PIONEER SUNBURN OINTMENT
Sunburn is caused by overexposure to Ultra Violet (UV) radiation – typically from sunshine, but increasingly from Ultra Violet “sunbeds” in Tanning Parlours. Assessments produced in 2008 indicate that the incidence of skin cancers caused by Ultra Violet radiation is 78% greater from a sunbed than from normal exposure to sunshine by sunbathing. Some skins react differently to others – but those figures are disturbing.
Burns can range from red skin that stings – through to badly blistered skin that has bubbled and burst. Normally ointments are not used on lightly sunburned skin. The skin should recover in 48 hours and it will more than likely peel between 4 and 7 days, to reveal a new skin layer. The immediate aim with that degree of burn is to cool and moisturise - to rehydrate the skin. Be careful here with essential oils. Some oils have an astringent effect - they shrink the skin, much like an after shave does for a man's chin. You dont want burnt skin to shrink! Olive Oil is a superb skin conditioner and it will be of tremendous help in keeping the skin supple during this irritating period.
Our Pioneer Sunburn Ointment comes into its own when the burns have caused broken and inflamed skin – which apart from being very painful, can become infected. Two traditional herbs that can be of significant help are Comfrey – for its rapid wound healing, and Calendula (Marigold) for its antiseptic and antifungal properties. Both herbs have a massive history of success with skin eruptions, blisters, cracked, inflamed and raw skin. The infusion of these two excellent herbs is made with Olive Oil, not water, and the ointment is settled with pure Beeswax. A light layer of ointment can be pasted onto a gauze pad which is then laid across the burned areas. Drink plenty of water to re-hydrate the body. Remember that skin breaks open because it has shrunk with the burning. The solution is to keep as much skin supple and hydrated as possible to aid a rapid recovery.
